Birks' advertising copy for the oh-so-crucial Winter Holidays engagement season (because, of course, the majority of proposals are made then) amuses me:

The diamond version of our song
I would have said yes anyway
i wear it and it says i found you
thought it would go well with the twinkle in your eye
my way of keeping you close
(about a diamond pendant and earrings)
if memories could be strung together
It's like you're holding my hand
(about a bracelet)
Birks has a gift for the original. In other words...you.
i see my reflection and hear us laughing

I cite my sources: they are here. But if any of you bright ladies are languishing over planning to abandon your husbands and propose to me, save your cash, I am not very thrilled with any of the items in the posters, sorry. Except for the Amorique, maybe.

It seems incredibly expertly-made cheesiness to the cynic in me (can't fault Birks, they have the budget to do their best to package romance to sell expensive jewelry --- note: you really can't see your reflection in a diamond, even a two-carat one.) However, ever since I found the romantic side of me, I keep thinking that there are indeed situations when the sentiment those advertisers are trying to package is true. Or at least, people have felt enough of a hint of it that they can believe spending $4,000 on a diamond would spring it fully into being. The number is straight off their promotional copy: "For a limited time only, we invite you to Birks to discover what $4,000 available line of credit on your Birks Card can do for that special someone in your life, or for yourself!"

Yes...four grand can do an awful lot for myself or for special people in my life. Especially if applied towards the purchase of a graduate education, or horizon-expanding travel. Gratitude is not love, indeed.

My necklace of serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine. I wear it, and it says I found...something to fiddle with for my compulsion. My Carnaval Diabolique locket. I wear it, and it says I found...myself.
